Helping families reunite for last farewell across distances

New Delhi: For 38 agonizing days, the family of Raman Kumar in India endured immense confusion and sorrow. Not only were they grappling with the devastating loss of their loved one, but they were also uncertain about how to bring his body back home for his final rites and darshan.

Recalling those harrowing days, Raman’s brother, Sunil Kumar, shared that it felt as though there was no hope left. Their hearts were heavy with despair, and their minds clouded with helplessness, as they were unable to travel to Dubai to retrieve Raman’s body for his parents to say their final goodbye.

Sunil arrived at Amritsar’s Sri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport to receive his brother’s body. “We were lost in a sea of emotions. It wasn’t until we contacted the Sarbat Da Bhala Charitable Trust (SDBCT) in Dubai that the situation began to resolve. The agony my parents experienced during that time, unsure if they would ever see Raman again, is indescribable,” he said.

Dr. SPS Oberoi, Managing Trustee of SDBCT, known for his extensive humanitarian work, explained that Raman had moved to Dubai seven years ago to secure a better future. Tragically, he suffered a fatal heart attack on October 22.

Dr. Oberoi went on to said that Raman’s relative, Sagar, along with his friends, had reached out to the Trust for help in repatriating Raman’s body to India. They were determined to ensure that Raman’s family could perform the last rites and allow his parents to have a proper farewell.

The Trust took charge of all the necessary paperwork and formalities required to transport Raman’s body. In addition, SDBCT provided financial assistance to cover the remaining costs after Raman’s friends and family had already contributed towards the initial expenses.

To date, the Trust has facilitated the repatriation of over 380 bodies, ensuring that people can return home for their final rites, said Dr. Oberoi.
